Murtala Muhammed’s Daughter Says Father’s Simplicity Contributed to His Assassination

Aisha Muhammed, daughter of Nigeria’s former Head of State, General Murtala Ramat Muhammed, has spoken about her father’s leadership style, personal values, and the circumstances surrounding his assassination.

According to Aisha, General Muhammed was widely known for his simplicity, discipline, and firm commitment to public service. She explained that her father lived modestly despite his position and deliberately avoided excessive security, luxury, or privileges associated with power.

She noted that while these qualities earned him widespread respect and cemented his legacy as one of Nigeria’s most principled leaders, they also exposed him to danger. Aisha said her father’s openness and lack of excessive personal protection made him vulnerable, ultimately contributing to the ease with which he was targeted and assassinated in 1976.

General Murtala Muhammed, who ruled Nigeria briefly between 1975 and 1976, is remembered for initiating sweeping reforms aimed at restoring discipline, accountability, and national pride. His administration took bold decisions, including civil service reforms and a strong anti-corruption stance, which significantly altered Nigeria’s political direction at the time.

Aisha’s reflections highlight the personal cost of leadership rooted in integrity and sacrifice, while also offering insight into the human side of a leader often remembered only through history books. She emphasized that despite his tragic end, her father’s principles continue to inspire Nigerians decades after his death.
