Sowore Warns Government Against Taxing Poor Nigerians
Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has warned that imposing additional taxes on poor Nigerians could provoke widespread public resistance.
Sowore made the statement while reacting to recent discussions around tax reforms and revenue generation policies by the federal government. According to him, many Nigerians are already struggling under harsh economic conditions marked by rising inflation, unemployment, and high cost of living.
He argued that taxing low-income earners and informal workers would further deepen hardship and fuel public anger, urging the government to instead focus on cutting waste, reducing corruption, and taxing the wealthy.
Sowore maintained that sustainable economic reform must prioritize social welfare and economic justice, stressing that policies perceived as unfair could lead to unrest.
