Islamic cleric and public commentator, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has alleged that he has been marked for elimination by elements linked to the Boko Haram insurgent group, citing what he described as credible security information from Abuja.
Sheikh Gumi made the claim while speaking on recent security developments, stating that intelligence sources within the nation’s capital had alerted him to potential threats against his life. According to him, the warning was issued as a precautionary measure due to his past public positions and involvement in discussions surrounding insecurity in northern Nigeria.
The cleric noted that although he was not provided with specific operational details, the information conveyed to him suggested that extremist elements viewed him as a target. He added that the alert underscored the risks faced by individuals who openly engage in public discourse on insurgency, banditry, and peace-building efforts in the country.
Sheikh Gumi has, in previous years, been involved in controversial dialogues and advocacy concerning the insurgency crisis, including calls for alternative approaches to resolving conflicts in affected regions. His positions have often attracted both support and criticism from various quarters.
As of the time of filing this report, Nigerian security agencies have not issued an official statement confirming or denying the claim. There has also been no public communication indicating any specific threat assessment regarding the cleric.
Nigeria continues to grapple with security challenges linked to insurgency and other criminal activities, particularly in parts of the North, prompting ongoing military and intelligence operations aimed at restoring stability.
Developments surrounding Sheikh Gumi’s claim will be closely monitored as more information becomes available.
