The Nigerian Presidency has sparked online debate after sharing an image from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s meeting with Rwandan President Paul Kagame in Paris that appeared to carry an artificial intelligence (AI) watermark.
The image, which was posted on an official government communication channel, quickly drew attention from social media users and media observers who questioned its authenticity and the circumstances surrounding its production. Screenshots circulating online showed markings commonly associated with AI-generated or AI-enhanced images, prompting speculation about whether the photograph had been digitally created or altered.
Critics argued that the use of an AI-watermarked image by an official government platform raises concerns about transparency, credibility, and public trust, particularly in the context of presidential engagements. Some commentators questioned why an AI-tagged image would be used instead of a conventional photograph captured by official photographers present at the meeting.
Others, however, cautioned against rushing to conclusions, noting that some modern editing and design tools automatically embed AI-related watermarks even when working with real photographs. They stressed that the presence of such a watermark does not necessarily mean the meeting did not take place.
As of the time of filing this report, the Presidency has not issued an official clarification explaining the origin of the image or whether it was AI-generated, AI-enhanced, or merely passed through an automated design platform.
The Tinubu–Kagame meeting in Paris was part of broader diplomatic engagements focused on regional cooperation, economic partnerships, and security discussions. However, the controversy surrounding the image has, for many observers, overshadowed the substance of the meeting itself.
The incident has renewed calls for clearer communication standards and greater caution in the use of AI tools in official government messaging, especially as artificial intelligence becomes increasingly integrated into media and public communications.
