Police Disperse Protesters at Lagos Assembly Over Community Demolitions

Operatives of the Lagos State Police Command on Tuesday, January 28, dispersed residents who staged a protest at the Lagos State House of Assembly complex over ongoing demolitions in several communities across the state.

The protesters had gathered at the assembly complex to express concerns over demolition exercises affecting Makoko, Owode Onirin, Oworonshoki, Otumara, and Baba-Ijora. They accused the state government of carrying out the demolitions without sufficient consultation, compensation, or resettlement arrangements for affected residents.

Witnesses said the protest, which began peacefully, was later dispersed after police operatives deployed tear gas to prevent the gathering from escalating and to restore order within the area.

Following the dispersal, protesters fled the scene. Some individuals reportedly sustained minor injuries while trying to move to safety. Normal activities around the assembly complex were later restored.

Authorities have yet to issue an official statement addressing the concerns raised by the protesters or the circumstances surrounding the dispersal.
