Lagos Court Orders Meta to Pay $25,000 Damages Over False Health Report on Femi Falana
A Lagos High Court has ordered Meta Platforms Inc., the parent company of Facebook, to pay $25,000 in damages over the publication of false health-related information concerning renowned human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN).
The court ruled that the misleading content, which circulated on Facebook, falsely suggested that Falana was suffering from a serious illness. The judge held that the publication was defamatory and violated Falana’s right to dignity and reputation.
In its judgment, the court stated that Meta failed in its duty to prevent the spread of harmful and unverified information on its platform, despite the potential damage such claims could cause to an individual’s public image.
Falana had approached the court seeking redress, insisting that the false claim caused reputational harm and emotional distress. The court agreed, awarding damages and reinforcing the responsibility of social media companies to curb misinformation.
The ruling adds to growing legal pressure on global tech firms over content moderation and accountability in Nigeria.
